Covid-19 – Week forty: beginning 07/12/2020

This week Christmas spirit fills the air as preparation for a Scout festive day of fun begins: Camp @ Home the forgotten sprout. But don’t worry no sprouts Scouts will be forgotten.

In preparations for the weekend, my evenings have been filled with final run throughs of the fun filled programme of crafts, chaotic live breakfast club, storytelling, mocktail making, a treasure hunt and pantomime. I am leading on Santa’s craft workshop, along with my team of elves. Our run through goes well and I create some beautiful reindeer, a snowglobe and a natural festive tree that won’t be going to waste.

The crafts are just what I need to start making a new Christmas tradition stemming back to my childhood. One of my favourite Christmas childhood traditions, that I keep to this day, is visiting Fenwicks window. This year was no exception, with the unveil moved online and I have to say Fenwicks did not disappoint, it was true Christmas magic with a Christmas Wind and the Willows tale.

During the unveiling I heard about this great Christmas competition Fenwicks are running for us all to create our own festive windows. We have been planning ever since.

Now complete we have decided to name the window ‘The True Spirit of Christmas’. As we decided to fill our window with homemade Christmas crafts. These crafts have filled the lead up to Christmas with hope festive fun and outings to find natural resources. And this weekend the crafts will be tried and tested by our Scouts from the safety of their homes.

The week flew – and…

The sprouts are in town. And in a flash, they are gone. Now on our fourth virtual Scout event you’d think I would get used to time flying when you’re having fun. Yet, each event I never want the fun to end.

As Sunday evening arrives, I scroll through the high volume of smiling posts, it fills me with joy to see our young people having fun, giving me hope that life can still be full of adventure.

And as I scroll through the news headlines, hope is confirmed: the first vaccines have and are being rolled out to the old and vulnerable, showing we can and are coming out of the pandemic. And the news feels even closer to home as my grandparents receive an invite for their first dose of the vaccine.
